Good idea to scan to tiff and convert to pdf via ps!
Furthermore, my pixma:04A91913_4BD907 scanner offers the possibility to pass the --mode=Lineart option to scanimage. This removes even the background and leaves just the text.
After passing through ps an even more lightweight pdf is created.
I suspect simple-scan used this option until it stopped working. It created very small pdfs.
Anyway, you can check if your scanner supports this option too with scanimage -A.
