Double counting of wide two panel figures

If I have a wide figure using {figure*} and there are two panels in it each 0.49\textwidth or something, then your script counts each of them as if they were full two panel figures. I don't think PRL does it this way (although I'm not actually sure).

As I wrote in the README this is a known limitation of the script, and the workaround is to have a single PDF file with two panels (which is something that I ended up doing for my papers for other reasons, such as more control on the alignment):

It can't detect whether multiple image files in the same figure environment are placed side by side or in column (the length check tool provided by APS doesn't either, by the way). A single pdf per figure is recommended.

It is a feature that can be added with some scripting, but I've never had the time. Contributions are of course welcome!

Ah, I read that when I first downloaded it but my paper didn't have any such figures at first and now it does. I'd love to help but I know zero perl.

I've just been subtracting the extra figure count by hand.
