NFTBan Trademark Policy

Owner: NFTBAN Project / Antonios Voulvoulis Marks: "NFTBan", "nftban", "NFTBAN", the NFTBan wordmark, the NFTBan logo, and all related brand assets. Contact: legal@nftban.com

1. Purpose

This policy governs the use of the NFTBan name, marks, and brand identity.

Trademark rights are separate from copyright and software licenses. The Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL-2.0) grants rights to use, modify, and distribute the NFTBan source code. It does not grant rights to use the NFTBan name, logo, or brand identity.

This policy complements the software licenses (MPL-2.0 for the Core and the NFTBan Pro Commercial License for Pro components).

2. What Is Protected

The following are trademarks of NFTBAN Project / Antonios Voulvoulis:

  • The name NFTBan (all capitalizations: "NFTBan", "nftban", "NFTBAN")
  • The name itcmsgr as associated with the NFTBan project
  • The NFTBan wordmark
  • The NFTBan logo and any derivative logo assets
  • Brand assets located in /branding

3. Allowed Use

You may use the NFTBan name in the following ways without prior written permission:

  • Descriptive reference: "Compatible with NFTBan", "Uses the NFTBan firewall engine", "Integrates with NFTBan"
  • Attribution: "Based on NFTBan", "Powered by NFTBan"
  • Community discussion: Blog posts, articles, talks, and reviews that refer to NFTBan by name
  • Non-commercial logo use: Displaying the official logo to indicate compatibility or community support, following /branding/README.md

When using the NFTBan name, include attribution where practical:

"NFTBan is a trademark of the NFTBAN Project / Antonios Voulvoulis. This work is not affiliated with or endorsed by the NFTBan project."

4. Prohibited Use

You may not, without prior written permission from legal@nftban.com:

4.1 Product and Service Names

  • Use "NFTBan" in any product name, service name, or offering name
  • Create product variants such as "NFTBan Pro", "NFTBan Enterprise", "NFTBan Cloud", "NFTBan Plus", "OpenNFTBan", or any similar construction
  • Name any software package, binary, CLI tool, or library using "nftban" or any confusingly similar name

4.2 Domain Names and Online Presence

  • Register domain names containing "nftban" (e.g., nftban-hosting.com, mynftban.io)
  • Create social media accounts, organizations, or namespaces using "nftban" or "NFTBan"

4.3 SaaS and Hosted Services

  • Offer any hosted service, SaaS platform, managed service, or API using the NFTBan name
  • Imply that a hosted service is an official NFTBan offering or is endorsed by the NFTBan project

4.4 Branding and Identity

  • Modify, combine, or merge the NFTBan logo with another mark or logo
  • Use the NFTBan name or marks in ways that imply endorsement, affiliation, official status, or partnership with the NFTBan project
  • Use the marks in misleading, defamatory, or illegal contexts

5. Fork Policy

Forking is encouraged under MPL-2.0. However, any redistributed or modified version must comply with all of the following:

  1. Must NOT use the name "NFTBan", "nftban", or "NFTBAN" in any form, including:

    • Project name
    • Binary or package names
    • CLI command names
    • Domain names
    • Branding or promotional materials
    • Repository names (except for an unmodified mirror)

  2. Must NOT use the name "itcmsgr" in ways that imply original authorship of the fork

  3. Must NOT use any NFTBan logo, wordmark, or brand asset

  4. Must rename the project to a distinct name with distinct branding

  5. May describe the fork as "a fork of NFTBan" or "based on NFTBan" for factual attribution

Failure to comply constitutes trademark infringement regardless of MPL-2.0 code license compliance.

6. Commercial Usage

Allowed Without Permission

  • Using NFTBan internally within your organization
  • Integrating NFTBan into infrastructure you operate
  • Hosting servers protected by NFTBan
  • Offering IT services where NFTBan is one tool among many, provided the service itself is not named or branded as NFTBan

Requires Written Permission

  • Selling a product or service named "NFTBan" or using the NFTBan brand
  • Distributing modified versions under the NFTBan name
  • Using the NFTBan name or logo in commercial advertising or marketing
  • Co-branding arrangements

7. Enforcement

The NFTBAN Project / Antonios Voulvoulis reserves the right to:

  • Revoke permission to use the NFTBan name and marks at any time
  • Take legal action to enforce trademark rights
  • Request removal of infringing uses

Use of the NFTBan marks in violation of this policy may result in legal action including, but not limited to, cease-and-desist notices and claims for trademark infringement.

8. Implementation-Language Note

NFTBan is a language-agnostic project. Implementations may include Bash, Go, Python, or other code. Trademark coverage applies to the project identity, not specific language bindings or implementation details.

9. Third-Party Trademarks

  • Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds in the United States and other countries. No affiliation or endorsement.
  • nftables is part of the Linux kernel project. Associated with the Linux Foundation. No affiliation.
  • Fail2Ban is a trademark of Cyril Jaquier and contributors. No affiliation or endorsement.

10. Changes to This Policy

This policy may be updated at any time. The current version is always available at TRADEMARK.md in the NFTBan repository.
