I've just noticed that there may be an error in the schematics, or in the source code:
in the schematics ENA is D6 and ENB is D5 but in the source code EN_A is 5 and EN_B is 6.
I've switched the cables on the Arduino and now it works great, before that cell A kept getting hotter and hotter while cell B remained cold.
