Option to open subsections collapsed by default in Grid lightbox #256

Description

@MaKoNLQ

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
We are using the Grid course format with the option to open sections in a lightbox / pop-up. Some of our course sections contain Moodle subsections.

When learners open a Grid section in the lightbox, the subsections are displayed expanded by default. In courses with several subsections and activities, this makes the lightbox content very long and harder to navigate.

This is especially problematic because the Grid lightbox is intended to provide a focused view of one section, but expanded subsections can make the pop-up feel overloaded.

Describe the solution you'd like
It would be very helpful to have the subsection collapsed by default or - even better - a setting that allows teachers to define the initial state of subsections inside the Grid lightbox.

For example, possible options could be:

  • open all subsections expanded,
  • open all subsections collapsed,

The main requested behaviour is:
When a learner opens a Grid section in the lightbox, all subsections should optionally be collapsed by default. Learners could then manually expand only the subsection they want to work on.

Describe alternatives you've considered
We considered using access restrictions, so that later subsections only become available after the previous activity has been completed. However, this does not solve the usability issue. After completing an activity or subsection, the lightbox closes and the learner is returned to the Grid overview, even though the section may still contain unfinished content. This creates an inconvenient navigation flow.

Additional context
I found some related issues, but none of them seems to cover this exact enhancement request:
#230 concerns subsections being displayed as "orphaned activities" in Moodle 4.5+ and appears to be fixed.
#233 concerns collapsed course sections not expanding correctly in editing mode.

Versions you are currently using (please complete the following information):

  • Moodle: 4.5.8
  • Format: 405.1.5
  • Browser and version: Google Chrome Version 148.0.7778.216 (Offizieller Build) (64-Bit), Microsoft Edge Version 148.0.3967.96 (Offizielles Build) (64-Bit)

Funding
We understand that new features and improvements may require financial funding. At the moment, we do not have dedicated resources available to fund this enhancement. Could you please let us know whether this feature would be technically feasible and whether there is any possibility that it could still be considered for implementation without dedicated funding?
