Make middle column flex-width

With the new design, it would be nice to let the middle/content column have a flexible with within limits, so that the present width is the minimum, and expanding to maybe 800 px, after which only the blank space outside of the side bars is expanding (as it does now).

After rebuilding the site, the middle column is still fixed-width on my machine (at least in Safari and Chrome). I re-open the issue.

Here's how it looked before the fix:

The area for content is much wider than before, but it's true that it doesn't always feel like it's adapting to the browser width. It would probably feel more flex-y if we gave the content section an even greater max width than 800px, and if we left-justified the site (see below).

Can you specify how you expected this to function?

On a somewhat related note, I recommend we switch from centering the page, which makes things jump around and is more complex, to left-justifying the content such that the left bar (with search, sitemap) is reliably anchored to the left, content comes second, and the "on this page" bar appears when space allows. I seem to remember there being a preference to center the site - if so, was there a reason behind that? Many CSS woes when upgrading the theme have been due in part to trying to respect the centering. Just in recording these videos I noticed there's another bug where there's not enough space between the left bar content and left edge at certain browser widths.

iPad size windows are fine, what I had mind was desktop / large screens were the browser window can grow really big, so you get the largest view design. In this view, the main content column presently has a fixed width, whereas I am suggesting that the width could be flexible between today’s width and a larger, maximum width.
