The original life stage vocabulary had 2 root entries for life stages of all plants & algae: the haploid gametophyte and diploid sporophyte:

Any other plant life stage should be a subclass of these 2. Seedling for example is a sporophyte phase. But a seedling, the plant right after germination of a seed, only applies to seed plants (spermatophytes) and not to algae, ferns or clubmosses.
