Currently, GBIF treats Ceratophyllum tanaiticum as a synonym of Ceratophyllum muricatum subsp. muricatum (GBIF ID: 5361817). However, modern phylogenetic, molecular, and morphological consensus strongly supports its status as a distinct, independent species (Les 1989, Csiky et al. 2010, Szalontai et al. 2018).
