Maybe it's an idea to have horizontal mouse movement for small steps and vertical mouse movements for big step.
If so it might be good to track behaviour. For example i want to make a small change that needs me to move the cursor 1 pixel to the right. Going 1 pixel to the right often leads also in going 1 pixel up or down.
