tippecanoe on linux mint 22

I tried to install tippecanoe in linux mint and ran into issues involving python. I know in the past I ran into similar issues and found out that mint doesn't allow python or newer python. Qt is also involved. What I want to do is convert some geojson layers to PM Tile layers, it sounds like that is what tippecanoe does.

I'm thinking about getting another computer to use as a local server. If there is a version of linux that tippecanoe works without any issues that may be my simplest solution. Then again it might be something on my end.

I ran into this earlier trying to use a plugin for QGIS to classify land areas. Looks like there is a new version of QT coming out that mint will have and all the plugins will have to be modified for that. It seems like there is some link between qt and python too, so maybe that issue will resolve itself, well maybe.

I really don't want to get involved in yet another computer project. I have plenty of those already not to mention other manner of projects. I just want to convert some geojsons to pm tiles to get gis project finished.

Building tippecanoe should not require python. Please paste the log of the errors you ran into.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't save the log file from the terminal. I had an issue with not having some sql library at first and then installed that. That is when I got some other errors and figured I'd look into things before going further. I was using this method to install. $ git clone https://github.com/felt/tippecanoe.git <https://l.gourl.es/l/000274513499468f2f280496ca093060ead69c58?u=1080085> $ cd tippecanoe $ make -j $ make install The second error was in the make -j part. That was yesterday. Since that time I have rebooted the computer and installed some system updates at least one of which required a reboot. That was not in response to this, just thought I'd do it. Today when I go back to that directory and do the make -j command I got no error. make install didn't work, but sudo make install did. No errors. I do keep getting errors that my input file is not found. I can see it. I have given it a very short name so there can be no typos and tried several times. I was trying tippecanoe first on a geojson I made using qgis. It loads and works in qgis and also I could use it in Geo Libre. I wanted to be sure it was a file that worked. In all my manipulations I did create some that didn't. I also set the output file to .pmtiles. Although I got the error saying it couldn't find the output file it did create the output .pmfile. That file does contain something about 32kb. Maybe the sudo install has something to do with this. Right now there are all sorts of distractions around here. Thought I'd pass this along. I'll try to figure out something on this end, when things calm down.

Update, After getting away for a while I had an idea. I had put the input file in the root or my home directory. The idea was to prevent problems to keep my typing to a minimum. I know it isn't good practice to put stuff there, but didn't realize I couldn't. I made a new directory in documents and moved the file there. Worked fine on the first smaller geojson. I tried again on the other, larger one. It didn't crash but was going on forever. I also remember I had made some geojsons that didn't work. I knew I exported they vector I made as a geotiff, but wondered if the project itself was set to 4326 as well and it wasn't. I then repeated the process and that geojson did work and did load in and reload in at least qgis. It took a long time. I stopped tippecanoe and decided to try again with a geojson where anything involved was set at 4326 and proceeded to make a new one. It was an older township map from the 1930s. That gives an idea of at least the area. It actually wasn't the map I intended which was also an old township map from the mid 1800s. It would be the same in area, but less detail. This one is taking a long time too. I'm just letting it go to completion and see what happens. I'm just using an old quad core laptop and I've got half its capacity reserved for a virtual drive. Works find for everyday things, but I have noticed that heavy processing it drags things down. I had been thinking of getting another box for a local host, etc. So I'm thinking more about it now. Thanks for the reply. The first one that competed worked fine. I haven't tried any of the various options. Just the recommended one to start with. These are old maps. No buildings, roads, etc.
