Yes — you can use only OpenRouter.

Perplexity is optional, not required. Task Master’s quick-start docs recommend Anthropic for the main model and Perplexity for the research model, but that is a recommendation, not a hard requirement.

What to do

1. Set your OpenRouter API key

Use your project .env for CLI usage, or the MCP config env block if you're running it through an agent/editor integration.

2. Point the research role to OpenRouter

For example:

task-master models --set-research=google/gemini-pro --openrouter

3. Set your main model too

If you want to go fully OpenRouter-only, set your main model to an OpenRouter-backed model as well.

You can also use the guided flow:

task-master models --setup

Important detail

Task Master separates these two things:

• Model configuration → .taskmaster/config.json
• API keys → .env or MCP configuration

So if it still doesn’t work, the problem is usually one of these:

• the model role wasn’t actually switched to OpenRouter
• the OpenRouter key is missing or in the wrong place
• the selected model/provider combo isn’t valid

So,Yes. OpenRouter-only is possible.
You do not need to also pay for Perplexity or Google just to make Task Master work.
