leftmost column in candidates produced by describe-variable, describe-function

When running describe-variable or describe-function with helm enabled, the list of candidates has 3 columns, as shown in the excerpt below:

v     edit-tab-stops-buffer     <documentation for the variable>
cv'  LaTeX-math-mode          <documentation for the variable>

As far as I can tell, the annotation in the first column is one of u, v, u', v', sometimes with a leading c (also f when using describe-function, sometimes c-). I can kind-of guess what some of them mean, but can't locate a precise explanation. Can someone please provide a pointer to the correct place in the source / documentation? Thanks!
