Unable to create GL Account code with more than 7 digits

We are currently trying to create GL account codes in the Finance module through the front end. However, we have observed that the system allows adding only a two-digit suffix to the parent code, resulting in a maximum GL code length of seven digits.

In our case, the required GL account codes are 10 digits long, due to which we are unable to create them through the UI.

We would like to understand:

1. Whether there is any way to add 10-digit GL account codes from the backend.
2. If this is possible, what would be the drawbacks or risks of doing so.
3. What kind of changes would be required (configuration/code changes).
4. An estimate of the effort involved in implementing this approach.
5. Can we also change the parent GL codes.

@abhinav1898 , could you please help us understand the context in which a 10-digit Chart of Accounts (CoA) is being considered?

As per NMAM, the default CoA structure is:
Type (1) – Major Code (2) – Minor Code (2) – Detailed Code (2)
Example: 1-10-01-01 (total 6 digits).

It would be helpful to understand the business rationale behind the proposed configuration—specifically, whether you are looking to

• add more hierarchical levels, or-
• increase the code length within existing levels.

This clarity will help us assess alignment with NMAM and evaluate configuration options appropriately.

@abhinav1898 The Major Code, Minor Code, and Details Code lengths are configurable in the eg_appconfig and eg_appconfig_values tables. These parameters are also used in the Chart of account Master UI for validation. The Chart of Accounts is stored in the chartofaccounts table.
