Optimization Recommendations

For High Throughput (>1M msg/sec)

  1. Kafka Configuration

    • Use 40+ partitions for massive parallelism
    • Enable LZ4 compression (3:1 ratio)
    • Increase batch size to 256KB
    • Use 4GB+ buffer memory
  2. Flink Configuration

    • Match parallelism to Kafka partitions
    • Enable object reuse
    • Use RocksDB for large state
    • Tune checkpoint interval (60s for large state)
  3. Hardware

    • 16GB+ RAM per TaskManager
    • 8+ CPU cores per TaskManager
    • 10Gbps network connectivity
    • SSD storage for checkpoints

For Low Latency (<50ms p99)

  1. Reduce Network Hops

    • Co-locate Flink and Kafka
    • Use same availability zone
    • Enable Kafka rack awareness
  2. Tune Buffer Timeouts

    • Set buffer timeout to 10-50ms
    • Reduce batch size to 16KB
    • Decrease linger.ms to 5ms
  3. Optimize Processing

    • Minimize state access
    • Use operator chaining
    • Avoid expensive operations in hot path

Testing Methodology

All benchmarks conducted using:

  • Dedicated hardware (no shared resources)
  • Multiple test runs (5+ iterations)
  • Warm-up period (5 minutes before measurement)
  • Sustained load (30+ minutes per test)
  • Production-like message sizes (1-10KB)
  • Realistic data distributions
