Hello Cormullion!

Can you believe it? It's time for JuliaCon 2026! I wonder if you would be able to continue contributing to JuliaCons. If so, may we please bother you with a logo design first?

The JuliaCon Global 2026 will take place in Mainz, Germany. It should be the 13th annual conference. The official name should be "JuliaCon Global 2026 Mainz".

I don't think we have any design ideas or color schemes in mind yet, thus you have the full liberty to design something truly stunning as always :D Although the conference will take place at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, but the Mainz Cathedral is a local icon of the city. And the Rhine river of course. Anyways, these are just my own thoughts.

I know I asked for the cathedral, but for some reason the last design has really caught my eye. Mainz is the birthplace of the printing press, maybe it has something to do with that.

Pinging the local boss @vchuravy for some further discussion.

yes, my original version of the bottom left one was

(basically blocks of type). But I thought it didn't register very well at small sizes... 🤷 I

The bottom right one was the 'em square/jgu logo' idea.

I hadn't started thinking about the river.

So some random thoughts from the comittee meeting:

• There is a logo style that is used by some of the mainzer public infrastructure (https://www.mainzer-stadtwerke.de/) which might make a good blue-print with some more Julian coloring:
  • Mainzer Public Transport is using https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainzer_Verkehrsgesellschaft
  • Mainzer engery https://www.mainzer-netze.de/
• The four corners one is a bit busy and maybe resembles the JuliaHub logo too much.

Although I like Gutenberg and his fraktur/blackletter typefaces, sadly they're not popular with everybody... I did make a fraktur-style Julia image but it doesn't match the vibe of a computer conference, even in Mainz:

A "j" in your "Mainzer" style you mentioned could work (perhaps better a "j" than an "M"?):

I noticed some interesting masonry patterns on one of the buildings which might tile nicely:

Inspired by the pattern design, how about having three wheel of Mainz with Julia colors? On a shield maybe like a proper coat of arms?

I know it's quite shameless for me to push someone who works for free @cormullion 🤦 , but have you thought about a bit more on the logo design? Based on how the committee feel, I think it's either a big "M" with Julia colors, like the fourth design above, or something with the wheel of Mainz.

Here are my two cents! Sorry for the quickly drawn ugly sketch! I think wheels will work quite naturally with the Julia logo. I like your gold frame!
