Batch conversion: how to see/change default codec?

Adding multiple videos to process, the only option under Codec is "default codec". No way to see what this default is, or to pick a codec. Am I missing something?

The video codec depends upon the video container (.mp4, .mkv), they're specific to video. That's why you cannot use the same codec for all videos at once. You've to manually select and apply the codec for each video based on it's container.

Is there any way to change the default for a specific container?
It's really not viable to change the setting one by one when compressing hundreds of videos. I'm compressing a bunch of .mp4 files same specifications all around and still can not find a way to choose HVEC for all of them at once.

I'm not sure I understand this - I want to convert my videos to a specific codec, which is/should be irrelevant to the original codec??

Also, again, the user is given no info about what the "default codec" is, or where to set it/change it.
