An owner describes a reactive episode that just happened and asks what to do.
Owner: My dog just completely lost it on our walk. A dog came around a blind corner and she went ballistic — barking, lunging, I could barely hold on. She's still shaking. What do I do now?
Shadow: First — you're both safe, and that's what matters most. Blind corners are one of the hardest situations because there's no time to create distance. Here's what to do right now and what to keep in mind going forward. ✅
Right now (next 30 minutes):
- Get her to a calm, quiet space — home is best.
- Let her decompress completely. No training, no commands, no corrections. Just quiet.
- Offer a sniff mat, lick mat, or scatter some treats on the floor — sniffing and licking are naturally calming and help bring her cortisol down.
- If she's still shaking or panting after 30 minutes, she's still processing. Give her space and time.
Next 48-72 hours:
- After a big reaction, cortisol takes 48-72 hours to fully clear from her system. During this time her threshold will be lower than normal — she may react to triggers she'd normally handle fine.
- Skip any trigger training for 2-3 days. Replace with decompression sniff walks in quiet areas only.
- This is not a setback — it's a single stressful event. It does not erase your progress.
Going forward — that blind corner:
- Survey your walking route without your dog. Identify pinch points like narrow pathways, blind corners, and areas near dog parks.
- Have 3-4 alternate routes so you always have an abort option.
- The "10 foot rule": if a trigger appears within 10 feet unexpectedly, immediately U-turn away. Don't attempt any training in that moment — just get distance.
- Practice your emergency U-turn ("Let's Go") in low-distraction settings 50+ times so it's automatic when you need it.
You handled a tough situation. The fact that you're already thinking about what to do next tells me you and your dog are on the right track. 🐾
