Overview
Document the observability architecture, health check capabilities, structured logging patterns, and create comprehensive runbooks for common operational scenarios (service degradation, deployment failure, incident response). This documentation provides the team with clear procedures for detecting, diagnosing, and recovering from failures with minimal downtime (MTTR targets: 10 minutes for degradation, 5 minutes for deployment failures).

Purpose: Define what each state means and how to detect it

Degraded: Core routes work, some features unavailable → Minor → 503 → Monitor 5min
Unhealthy: Critical failures, routes return 500s → Major → 500 → Execute runbook
Section 5: Monitoring Integration
Purpose: Explain how monitoring systems integrate with observability
Health check monitoring: External monitors poll /api/health endpoint
Expected: 200 status within 5 seconds
Alert if: Status changes to 503/500, or endpoint unresponsive >30s
Structured logs: Sent to Vercel console, can be forwarded to external systems (Datadog, etc.)

Diagnose root cause:

Look for recent errors or warnings
Filter by time (last 10 minutes)
Analyze error patterns
Are errors consistent? Or intermittent?
Are they in application code or infrastructure?
Example error patterns:
Cannot load PROJECTS registry → data loading issue
NEXT_PUBLIC_* variable missing → env var issue
Timeout calling external API → network issue
Identify root cause category:
Category A: Data Issue (projects registry empty/corrupted)
Category B: Configuration Issue (env vars missing/wrong)
Category C: Resource Issue (CPU/memory constrained)
Category D: External Dependency (slow/unavailable API)
Section 6: Recovery (2–5 minutes)
Execute fix based on root cause:
If Category A (Data Issue):
Check if projects.ts file corrupted

If corrupted: Revert to last known good commit

Initial assessment

Prevent further impact:
Stop deploying
Tell team: No more deploys until this is resolved

Identify previous working deployment

Find last known good deployment (green checkmark)
Click on deployment
Click "Promote to Production" button
Confirm: "Yes, promote this deployment"
Wait for promotion to complete (~30s)
Verify: curl https://portfolio.example.com/api/health returns 200
Option 2: Git Rollback (if rollback button unavailable)
Identify broken commit: git log --oneline | head -1
Identify last known good: git log --oneline | head -3 | tail -1
Create rollback commit:
git revert -m 1 < broken-commit-sha>
git push origin main
Vercel automatically triggers new deployment
Wait for deployment to complete and verify health check
Section 6: Verification (1–2 minutes)
Confirm rollback was successful:

Understand what went wrong:
Examine build logs

Identify error messages
