Findings distilled from the private dataset: the CVs of the 26 named race-engineering staff across all 11 teams on the 2026 F1 grid, reconstructed from public sources and confidence-graded. The per-person roster stays in the private dataset (see the README data notice); what follows are the aggregate patterns, which is the part you can act on.
Two dominant doors dominate the sample:
uni → junior single-seaters / in-house(15 of 26). Engineering degree → trackside in F3/F2/GP2 or sportscars, or hired young into an F1 team and promoted up through design/simulator/performance roles. The purest in-house version: both McLaren race engineers went Cambridge → McLaren and never left.data / systems engineer → RE(8 of 26). Join an F1 team directly as a data, systems or controls engineer and climb data → performance engineer → race engineer.motorsport MSc → F1(2 of 26). A specialist motorsport MSc can be the accelerator when paired with early F1 performance or design experience.
The climb is real and slow. Median 8 years from first F1 job to first race-engineer seat (range 0–17). The radio is earned from inside; it is almost never a direct hire. Every "0–3 year" case in the sample had already done their race-engineering apprenticeship in junior categories or at another F1 team first.
Performance engineer is the launchpad. Nearly every RE was a performance engineer immediately before getting the seat. If you want the radio, that's the job to target first.
The degree is the ticket. Every engineer with a documented education holds an MEng/MSc in mechanical, aerospace or automotive engineering. Recurring schools: Cambridge, Sheffield, Oxford Brookes (motorsport MSc), Loughborough, Cranfield, Strathclyde, Imperial, Politecnico di Milano, ESTACA.
Adjacent roles below/around RE: the repeatable ladder is usually data/systems/controls → performance engineer → race engineer. Other important trackside roles include PU performance/systems engineer, tyre engineer, trackside aerodynamicist, strategy engineer/strategist and simulation/simulator engineer — see the Role Map tab of the dashboard.
- Degree — MEng/MSc mechanical / aero / automotive. A specialist motorsport-engineering MSc (Oxford Brookes, Cranfield, Southampton) is a proven accelerant in the sample.
- Get in any garage — two doors: (a) trackside in junior single-seaters or sportscars/WEC, then jump to F1; or (b) join an F1 team directly as a data / systems / controls engineer (the most common true entry role).
- Climb to performance engineer — data/systems → performance engineer. This is the proving ground; do it well next to a race driver.
- Wait for the seat — ~8 years of trust-building; a seat opens when a senior RE is promoted upward and the performance engineer behind them moves up.
- Have an edge — aero/vehicle-dynamics depth, an OEM academy, or a standout adjacent record (elite sport, unusual series experience) each recur as differentiators in the sample.

engineer → race engineer; the most successful driver-engineer pairing in
history (six titles with Hamilton). The canonical
data-eng → REarc. - Laura Müller — first female full-time F1 race engineer (Haas); TU Munich → sportscars/DTM → simulator → performance engineer → race engineer in three years inside the team.
