https://github.com/DLR-SC/googletest_mpi provides special semantic for google tests and MPI.
Code is under BSD-3 license so it would not be an issue to integrate it directly in our sources. (And it will make the googletest dependency to go away).
Using regular unit tests have some important drawbacks, described in https://elib.dlr.de/144193/1/Testing%20HPC%20C%2B%2B%20software%20with%20GoogleTest.pdf.
