Phase 2.0 - Advanced Features & Production Upgrades

Status: Complete [Check] | Build: Passing [Check] | Tests: 5/5 [Check]

Overview

UniStack Phase 2.0 brings production-grade features including advanced language support, comprehensive testing infrastructure, Language Server Protocol (LSP), sophisticated type system, and production utilities for enterprise deployments.

[Target] Major Components

1. Extended Language Syntax (UniStack v2)

File: src/lang/UniStack-v2.g4

New syntax features:

Async/Await Functions

unistack app "API" version 1.0.0 {
  py:
    async def fetchData() -> dict {
      result = await someAsyncOp()
      return result
    }

  routes:
    GET "/data" {
      data = py:fetchData()
      json { "data": data }
    }
}

Generics & Type Parameters

py:
  def head<T>(items: List[T]) -> T {
    return items[0]
  }

  def process<T, R>(value: T, transform: T -> R) -> R {
    return transform(value)
  }

Decorators

py:
  @cache(ttl=300)
  @rate_limit(requests=100, window=60)
  def getUsers() -> List[User] {
    return DataSet.query('users').all()
  }

Advanced Type Annotations

py:
  def handler(
    name: str,
    age: int,
    tags: List[str],
    config: Optional[Dict[str, str]]
  ) -> bool:
    return True

Error Handling Blocks

routes:
  POST "/create" {
    try {
      item = DataSet.create('items', { name: data.name })
      json { "success": True, "id": item.id }
    }
    catch {
      json { "error": "Failed to create" }
    }
  }

Conditional Rendering

html-ui:
  {if user.authenticated}
    <div>
      <h1>Welcome {py:user.name}</h1>
      <button class="btn btn-danger">Logout</button>
    </div>
  {else}
    <div>
      <p>Please log in</p>
      <button class="btn btn-primary">Login</button>
    </div>
  {end};

2. Advanced Code Generator

File: src/transpiler/advanced.ts

Automatic Type Generation

// Generated automatically from .uni file
export namespace API {
  export interface GetUsersRequest {}
  export interface GetUsersResponse {
    users: User[];
    count: number;
  }
}

Async-Safe Handlers

export async function getUsers(req: Request, res: Response): Promise<void> {
  try {
    const users = await DataSet.query('users').all();
    res.json({ users });
  } catch (error) {
    res.status(500).json({ error: error.message });
  }
}

Generic Functions

export function map<T, R>(items: T[], fn: (item: T) => R): R[] {
  return items.map(fn);
}

Performance Monitoring Wrappers

export function withMonitoring<F extends (...args: any[]) => any>(
  fn: F,
  name: string
): F {
  return ((...args: any[]) => {
    const start = performance.now();
    try {
      const result = fn(...args);
      const duration = performance.now() - start;
      console.log(`[PERF] ${name} took ${duration.toFixed(2)}ms`);
      return result;
    } catch (error) {
      console.error(`[PERF] ${name} failed`, error);
      throw error;
    }
  }) as F;
}

Type-Safe Query Builder

export class QueryBuilder<T> {
  where(field: keyof T, op: string, value: any): this {
    this.filters.push({ field: String(field), op, value });
    return this;
  }

  limit(n: number): this {
    this.limit_val = n;
    return this;
  }

  build(): Query {
    return { filters: this.filters, limit: this.limit_val };
  }
}

Caching Decorator

const cache: Map<string, { value: any; ttl: number }> = new Map();

export function withCache<F extends (...args: any[]) => any>(
  fn: F,
  ttl: number = 60000
): F {
  return ((...args: any[]) => {
    const key = JSON.stringify(args);
    const cached = cache.get(key);

    if (cached && Date.now() < cached.ttl) {
      return cached.value;
    }

    const result = fn(...args);
    cache.set(key, { value: result, ttl: Date.now() + ttl });
    return result;
  }) as F;
}

3. Language Server Protocol (LSP)

File: src/lang/lsp.ts

Enables IDE integration for:

Code Completion

npm run lsp
# Server listens for LSP requests:
# - completionItem/resolve
# - textDocument/completion
# - textDocument/hover
# - textDocument/definition

Features:

  • Keyword completion (unistack, routes, py, js, etc.)
  • Built-in function completion (DataSet, Response, etc.)
  • Symbol completion

Hover Information

User hovers over: DataSet
Server responds:
  "Abstraction layer for database queries with parameterized SQL"

Provides documentation for:

  • Keywords
  • Built-in functions
  • Variables
  • Routes
  • Decorators

Diagnostics & Error Reporting

Missing "unistack app" declaration → Error
Missing version → Warning
Unmatched braces → Error

Code Navigation

- Find Definition - Jump to function/variable definition
- Find References - Find all uses of a symbol
- Symbol Extraction - Extract all functions/variables in document
- Rename Symbol - Rename across document

Document Formatting

Before:
unistack app "Test" version 1.0.0{routes: GET "/" { } }

6. Advanced Type System v2

File: src/lang/types.ts

Type Inference

const inference = new TypeInference();

// Infer from value
const type = inference.inferType({ name: 'John', age: 30 });
// Returns: { kind: 'interface', name: 'object', properties: {...} }

Generic Types

// Define generic type
interface List<T> {
  items: T[];
  add(item: T): void;
  remove(item: T): void;
}

Union & Intersection Types

const unionType = inference.createUnion(
  { kind: 'primitive', name: 'string' },
  { kind: 'primitive', name: 'number' }
);

const intersectionType = inference.createIntersection(
  { kind: 'interface', name: 'Named' },
  { kind: 'interface', name: 'Described' }
);

Type Validation

inference.registerType('User', userType);

// Check compatibility
const compatible = inference.isCompatible(actualType, expectedType);

// Get type info
const userType = inference.getType('User');

Common Type Utilities

typeUtils.isNullable(type)
typeUtils.isOptional(type)
typeUtils.isGeneric(type)
typeUtils.getTypeParameters(type)
typeUtils.isCallable(type)
typeUtils.getFunctionSignature(type)

7. Production Utilities

File: src/runtime/production.ts

Circuit Breaker Pattern

const breaker = new CircuitBreaker(5, 60000);

try {
  const result = await breaker.execute(async () => {
    return await flakeyService();
  });
} catch (error) {
  // Circuit is open, fail fast
}

States: closed → open → half-open → closed

Retry with Exponential Backoff

const retry = new Retry(3, 100, 10000);

const result = await retry.execute(async () => {
  return await unreliableOp();
});
// Retries up to 3 times with exponential delays: 100ms, 200ms, 400ms

Health Checks

const health = new HealthCheck();

health.register('database', async () => {
  return await checkDatabaseConnection();
});

health.register('cache', async () => {
  return await checkRedisConnection();
});

const status = await health.getStatus();
// Returns: 'healthy' | 'degraded' | 'unhealthy'

const results = await health.runAll();
// Returns: [{ name: 'database', healthy: true, timestamp: ... }, ...]

Graceful Shutdown

const shutdown = new GracefulShutdown();

shutdown.register('database', async () => {
  await db.disconnect();
});

shutdown.register('server', async () => {
  await server.close();
});

shutdown.setupSignalHandlers();
// Now handles SIGTERM and SIGINT gracefully

Error Recovery

// Safe execution with fallback
const result = await errorRecovery.safeExecute(
  () => risky(),
  defaultValue,
  (error) => console.log('Error:', error)
);

// Execution with timeout
const data = await errorRecovery.withTimeout(
  () => slowOperation(),
  5000  // 5 second timeout
);

// Validated execution
const valid = await errorRecovery.validateAndExecute(
  () => input.isValid(),
  () => processInput(),
  null
);

Resource Management

const manager = new ResourceManager();

const connection = await createConnection();
manager.register('db', connection, async () => {
  await connection.close();
});

// On shutdown:
await manager.cleanupAll();

Rate Limiting

const limiter = new RateLimiter(100, 60000);

if (limiter.isAllowed(userId)) {
  // Process request
} else {
  // Reject request - rate limit exceeded
}

const usage = limiter.getUsage(userId);
// Returns: { used: 45, remaining: 55, resetTime: Date }

import * as API from './generated/api.ts';

const handler = async (req: Request): Promise<API.GetUsersResponse> => {
  const users = await DataSet.query('users').all();
  return { users, count: users.length };
};

Using LSP for IDE Integration

# In VS Code settings.json
{
  "unistack.languageServer": {
    "enable": true,
    "path": "node_modules/.bin/unistack-lsp"
  }
}

Using Performance Monitoring

import { monitor } from './runtime/monitor';

app.use((req, res, next) => {
  monitor.mark(`request-${Date.now()}`);
  res.on('finish', () => {
    monitor.measure(`response-time`, `request-${Date.now()}`);
  });
  next();
});

app.on('shutdown', () => {
  monitor.logReport();
});

Using Production Utilities

const server = new UniStackServer();
const health = new HealthCheck();
const shutdown = new GracefulShutdown();

// Register health checks
health.register('database', checkDb);
health.register('cache', checkCache);

// Register shutdowns
shutdown.register('database', closeDb);
shutdown.register('server', closeServer);

// Add health endpoint
app.get('/health', async (req, res) => {
  const status = await health.getStatus();
  res.status(status === 'healthy' ? 200 : 503).json(status);
});

// Setup graceful shutdown
