Feature Description

As snapshots are blocking cross cluster migration, it would be great to have a "delete-all-snapshots"-feature

Problem / Use Case

When doing cross-cluster-migration, I have to delete every single snapshot

Thanks for the suggestion, and for the clear use case.

We looked into this and have some reservations about a generic "delete all snapshots" button, especially one acting on many VMs at once:

• Deleting a snapshot is not free: on qcow2 it triggers a delta merge into the disk image, which is I/O intensive and can take a long time when a VM has many or large snapshots. These operations also have to run one at a time per VM (the VM config is locked during each merge), so a bulk delete is inherently serial and can be slow.
• A single button that wipes snapshots broadly is easy to misclick and hard to undo.

Since the real pain point you describe is snapshots blocking cross-cluster migration, we think a more targeted and safer approach fits better: at migration time, detect whether the VM still has snapshots, block the migration with a clear message, and offer to delete them right there from the migration dialog (sequentially, with progress), so you no longer have to go clean them up by hand beforehand.

To make sure we build the right thing, a couple of questions:

1. Is your need always tied to migration, or would you also want to clear snapshots outside of a migration context?
2. Is it per-VM (the specific VM you are migrating), rather than "all VMs on the cluster" at once?
