Project Description
An offline Android app that safeguards Indian fishermen from accidental maritime border crossings.
SafeHarbor uses GPS and real maritime boundary data to detect proximity to international waters and alerts fishermen through vibration—no internet or external hardware required.
Inspiration behind the Project
Every year, hundreds of Indian fishermen are arrested simply for crossing a line they can’t see. In 2023 alone, over 600 fishermen were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy after unknowingly drifting across the maritime border. Many of them spend months in custody, lose their boats — their only livelihood — and return home after long, uncertain waits.
These aren’t isolated stories. They’re fathers, sons, and brothers from coastal communities who head out to sea with hope, not high-tech equipment. Without internet access offshore and unable to afford GPS devices, they navigate with instinct — and sometimes, instinct isn’t enough.
That’s why we built SafeHarbor — an offline, mobile-based app that quietly alerts fishermen with gentle vibrations as they near international waters. No flashy screens, no internet required — just a simple signal that could change someone’s fate.
Our mission is clear and deeply personal:
“No one should pay the price for crossing an invisible line."
Tech Stack
- Android (Java/Kotlin) – For building the mobile application
- GPS Location Services – To fetch real-time user coordinates
- Offline CSV Boundary Data – Preloaded maritime boundary coordinates (EEZ, territorial limits)
- Haversine Formula & Vector Math – For distance calculations to nearest boundary segment
