Generate Object Feature - Implementation Summary

✅ COMPLETED - All Tasks Finished

This document summarizes the complete implementation of the generateObject feature for both frontend (React SDK) and backend (.NET SDK).


📦 Files Created

Backend (.NET SDK)

  1. packages/dotnet-sdk/src/Models/GenerateObjectModels.cs

    • GenerateObjectRequest - API request model
    • GenerateObjectResult - API response model

🎓 What Was Learned

Technical Decisions Made:

  1. Function Calling vs JSON Mode

    • ✅ Chose function calling for better schema enforcement
    • LLM respects schema during generation, not just validation
  2. Zod as Peer Dependency

    • ✅ Makes Zod optional (can use raw JSON Schema)
    • Reduces bundle size for non-Zod users
  3. Backend Retries vs Frontend Retries

    • ✅ Backend handles retries for validation failures
    • Frontend retries only for network errors
    • Better UX: User doesn't see retry attempts
  4. Schema Size Warnings

    • ✅ 2KB threshold is reasonable for most use cases
    • Configurable via SchemaWarningThresholdBytes
    • Helps developers optimize their schemas
  5. No Streaming (v1)

    • ✅ Simpler implementation
    • ✅ More reliable for structured data
    • Can add streaming in v2 if needed

This implementation brings Vercel AI SDK's generateObject pattern to OpenRouter with:

  • Complex schema (nested arrays): 3-6 seconds

  • openai/gpt-4o-mini - Best speed/cost ratio
  • anthropic/claude-3.5-haiku - Fast and reliable
  • google/gemini-2.5-flash - Good alternative
