<h2>Bridging the Humanities and Mathematical Sciences in the Classroom</h2>
<p><strong>The History and Mathematics in Education Network (HaMiEN)</strong> is an international professional network connecting primary and secondary teachers, museum educators, university researchers and curriculum specialists who are interested in using history to enrich mathematics education, and mathematics to enrich history education.</p>
<p>We believe in the potential for history and mathematics to deeply enrich educational experiences in both subjects. Exploring the history of mathematics reveals the human stories, motivations, and cultural breakthroughs behind abstract concepts. At the same time, recognising the mathematics woven into history allows students to see how developments in commerce, navigation, technology, and architecture were fundamentally built upon mathematical advancements. By bridging these fields, we bring students closer to a complete, connected understanding of human progress.</p>
<p>The History and Mathematics in Education Network (HaMiEN) connects teachers, museum educators, and researchers who are interested in exploring opportunities for cross-curricular enrichment between Mathematics and History.</p>

<h2>About the History and Mathematics in Education Network</h2>

<h3>HaMiEN's Inception</h3>
<p>The idea for the <i>History and Mathematics in Education Network</i> developed while Jason Yip and Tom Briggs began to share findings from a project conducted at the end of 2024. Many teachers that they spoke to agreed that the principles of using maths and history to each enrich the teaching of the other were enticing, but specialist teachers of each subject often brought up the same problem: they often didn't have much experience of the <i>other</i> subject, especially when it came to knowledge of curriculum content.

<h3>Jason</h3>
<p>Jason is a PhD candidate and Academic Skills Adviser (Mathematics) at Middlesex University, specialising in the history of mathematics and mathematics education. A multilingual educator, he holds a BEd in Mathematics and Mathematics Education from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and an MA in Mathematics and Pedagogy from the Education University of Hong Kong. With experience across diverse educational stages, from elementary to tertiary, he is dedicated to enhancing mathematics education through historical and multicultural perspectives.</p>

<h3>Tom</h3>
<p>Tom is a experienced mathematics teacher and also spent eight years contributing the development of an award-winning museum learning programme. In 2022 he completed an MA in Education, with his final thesis focusing on the potential that museums have for contributing to improving attitudes to mathematics for secondary school students. His work as a Museum Learning Consultant builds upon this, encouraging heritage-sector organisations to provide opportunities to experience the connections between history and mathematics in education.</p>
<p> 🕮 His book, <a href="https://tkbriggs.co.uk/other-projects/publications/the-mathematicians-library/"><i>The Mathematicians' Library</i></a>, was published in September 2025.</p>
