Feature request: Add alternative way to log into Trakt (API locked behind subscription now)

Feature description

I've just been wondering why I can't sync my watched status to Trakt anymore. Until I saw when doing a manual sync that my API connection got rewound. Reading up on it, Trakt now locked API-key based authentification behind their VIP subscription. Only one 'App', obviously no direct API access, is allowed for a free account. They claim existing connections won't be cut, yet my plextraktsync API app has miraculously disappeared.

Please, if possible, provide a different way of authorising a Trakt account.

I think (at least for now) only creating the required key and secret need VIP accounts, but API access is free.

So in theory someone with VIP account could create the key and secret for the app, and the users will use the key and secret to access. Just as how Trakt intend it to work. The question is how do you do this in an open source app without having someone abusing your key and secret to the point of getting your account banned.

There's nothing the project maintainers can do about it. This app is dead to anyone who isn't Trakt VIP.

Move to MDBList, Simkl, or a self-hosted solution like Yamtrack, Scrob, Floppy, Ryot...

At this point, I'm sure there is little left to hope for with Trakt. They are just constantly restricting features for free users, without warning and with no sense of a good freemium model. Trakt free accounts started becoming useless. I've decided to give Floppy a chance and will transition soon. Thanks for the insight though!

Will do, Floppy looks like a worthy alternative that will also cover books for me. Happy times!

Does any of these support TheTVDB as a data source? With TMDB refusing sports series like Formula 1, that's a big gap for most of these that seem to rely on TMDB exclusively

I haven't tested it, but from its documentation, Floppy seems to support TheTVDB: https://github.com/dannyvfilms/Floppy .

@Kernald Then I don't know why you can set a TVDB API key (optional) via environmental variables. See the docs and search for tvdb.

Well, i moved all my data to simkl a year ago, when trakt started throttling connections. It's still the only viable option of retaining the public space to share your watch history

Yeah that's not gonna happen. If they do they'll be fined millions for violating the Data Act and GDPR. Thank the EU for that.

Devs have promised that the API thing is temporary and will be returning, but I checked out of Trakt ages ago when the writing was on the wall. Completely screwed over their user base how many times now? A real shame.
