It can be disorienting at times keeping a ship on track as the viewing frame changes at greater helm angles whenever the craft physically reorients, resulting in unintentional donuts.
Describe the solution you'd like
The solution would be to have a sign that could toggle if the craft should stop advancing the bearing right before a bearing that it would rotate the ship itself. For example:
- Ship facing North at a Bearing of 0
- "Cruise: ON"
- "RudderLock: ON"
- Helm angle set to 5
- Bearing advances 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40-
- Bearing is prevented from advancing past 40 while the lock is active
- Since the Bearing cannot cross a craft rotation threshold, the craft does not physically rotate
- "RudderLock: OFF"
- Bearing advances 40, 45...
- Craft rotates
Suggestions for terms other than "RudderLock"
- HelmLock: OFF = Has a good sound to it but has no real world control term analog
- Rudder: OFF = not advised as it might imply that turning in general is disabled
- Rotation: OFF = Simplest though has no real world control term analog
- Trim: OFF = Repurpose the Trim sign (Trim: OFF) as this would fit the definition better, "Pitch" would thus fully replace the current role of the Trim sign for altitude control and more accurately follow definition
