Use hepunits for HEP units?

Hello @olantwin, you mentioned in previous discussions the potential interest in switching to hepunits rather than maintaining a (albeit very simple) submodule for units in SHiP. Let me know if you would like to move forward with this. I can look into it.

Just in case: I see that I cannot speficy labels and cannot assign to anyone. All righthand menu items are inactive for me. Dunno for others.

That would be great! We just have to be a bit careful with the two different conventions in use in this repo (ROOT vs. Geant4). Maybe a good opportunity to be more consistent?

That should be fixed now for you, I've invited you to the organisation (I thought I already had). At least the core-developers team should be able to label/assign, not sure about members of other (or no) teams.

I should add that on the C++ side @graeme-a-stewart is driving a community effort to have a unified and for-all library, se the WIP https://github.com/HSF/hep-constants/. @graeme-a-stewart, the interest from SHiP could serve as a use-case for a first release in the not too distant future as C++ and Python would be construction be in sync?

Thanks, I'll have a look at that. I've also been investigating and using mp_units in our geometry service to exercise it a bit, but that is C++ only

Yeah, that is a very different beast, far more "intrusive", as it were. Graeme's library is pretty much the same philosophy used so far to have units in our various C++ libraries.

This looks very nice! I'd be interested in using this wherever mp_units is too intrusive (and maybe together with it instead of its own constants for HEP (or maybe we could ask that this is used for the HEP plugin instead of the lead dev reimplementing the same thing independently).

Hello @olantwin @eduardo-rodrigues - yeah, unfortunately the constants project rather stalled for now. However, if there's genuine interest then this could spur some continued development.

Morning @graeme-a-stewart. Indeed, this might give it an extra push. There were some suggestions in the private exchanges you had with some interested colleagues. Maybe those could be turned into issues on the repo and the package advertised on the HSF forum to try and attract contributors? There's a lot of people subscribed to the forum and we've seen people around picking up tasks, so it does not sound too crazy. Dunno, just a thought.
