OpenFixture - Migration & Modernization Guide

Overview

OpenFixture has been completely modernized to work with the latest KiCAD API (8.0/9.0+) and includes professional features inspired by modern plugin architectures. This guide covers migrating from legacy versions and highlights the KiCAD 9.0+ API changes that have been addressed.


What's New

1. Full KiCAD 9.0+ API Compatibility

Legacy Version:

KiCAD 9.0+ Breaking Changes Addressed:

  • GetAuxOrigin/SetAuxOrigin removed - backward compatible wrapper added
  • DXF_UNITS_MILLIMETERSDXF_PLOTTER_UNITS_MILLIMETERS - auto-detection
  • SetLineWidth, SetColor, SetExcludeEdgeLayer removed - graceful fallbacks
  • ✅ All plot parameter methods wrapped with try-except for version compatibility

2. Python 3 Modern Codebase

  • ✅ All print statements converted to functions: print("text") instead of print "text"
  • ✅ Modern type hints for better code clarity
  • ✅ Proper exception handling with context managers
  • ✅ PEP 8 compliant code style
  • ✅ subprocess instead of os.system for better error handling

3. TOML Configuration Support

Before: All parameters hardcoded in wrapper scripts

After: Clean configuration files

4. Improved KiCAD Plugin

Old Plugin:

  • ❌ Hardcoded paths in source code
  • ❌ Basic single-page dialog

  • ❌ No configuration file support

New Plugin (openfixture.py):

  • ✅ Fully functional parameter extraction
  • ✅ Multi-tab organized dialog
  • ✅ Material presets for quick selection
  • ✅ Comprehensive error handling
  • ✅ Progress dialog during generation
  • ✅ Automatic config file detection
  • ✅ Opens output directory on success

5. Better Logging and Error Messages

Old: Minimal output, hard to debug

WARNING, ABORTING: No test points found!

New: Comprehensive logging with context

6. Modular Design

Migration Steps

Step 1: Backup Current Setup

# Backup your current files

Step 2: Install New Version

Option A: Side-by-side (Recommended)

# Keep old version working, add new version alongside
# Old files: GenFixture.py, genfixture.bat, openfixture.py
# New files: GenFixture.py, GenFixture.bat, openfixture.py

Option B: Replace

# Replace old files with new versions

Step 3: Create Configuration File (Optional but Recommended)

Create fixture_config.toml in your project directory:

Step 4: Update Wrapper Scripts

Old genfixture.bat:

New GenFixture.bat:

"c:\Program Files\KiCad\bin\python.exe" GenFixture.py --board %BOARD% --config fixture_config.toml ...

Step 5: Update KiCAD Plugin

Installation Path:

Windows: %USERPROFILE%\Documents\KiCad\<version>\3rdparty\plugins/
Linux:   ~/.local/share/kicad/<version>/3rdparty/plugins/
macOS:   ~/Library/Application Support/kicad/<version>/3rdparty/plugins/

Steps:

  1. Copy openfixture.py to plugins directory
  2. Copy GenFixture.py to plugins directory
  3. Copy OpenFixture.png icon if available
  4. Restart KiCAD

Step 6: Test with Existing Project

Command-line Override

Config file values are used as defaults, but command-line arguments override them:

# Uses config file values
python GenFixture.py --board test.kicad_pcb --config fixture_config.toml

# Overrides material thickness from config
python GenFixture.py --board test.kicad_pcb --config fixture_config.toml --mat_th 4.0

Troubleshooting

Issue: "No module named 'tomllib'"

Cause: Python < 3.11 doesn't include tomllib

Solution:

# Install tomli (backport of tomllib)
pip install tomli

# Or use without TOML (command-line args only)
python GenFixture.py --board test.kicad_pcb --mat_th 3.0 --out fixture

Issue: "AttributeError: module 'pcbnew' has no attribute 'VECTOR2I'"

Cause: Using old KiCAD version (< 8.0)

Solution:

  • Upgrade to KiCAD 8.0 or 9.0
  • Or continue using old GenFixture.py

Issue: Plugin doesn't appear in KiCAD

Cause: File not in correct location or wrong KiCAD version

Solution:

  1. Check installation path matches your KiCAD version
  2. Ensure openfixture.py is directly in plugins folder (not subfolder)
  3. Check file permissions (must be readable)
  4. Restart KiCAD completely
  5. Check KiCAD Plugin Manager: Tools → Plugin and Content Manager

Issue: "Could not find GenFixture.py"

Cause: Plugin can't locate generator script

Solution:

Put both files in the same directory.

Backward Compatibility

Old Scripts Still Work

Your existing wrapper scripts will continue to work if you keep GenFixture.py:

Recommended Migration Timeline

Week 1: Installation and Testing

  • Install v2 files alongside v1
  • Test with non-critical projects
  • Familiarize with new plugin UI

Week 2: Configuration Files

  • Create TOML configs for active projects
  • Test wrapper scripts with configs
  • Validate output matches v1

Week 3: Production Use

  • Switch primary workflow to v2
  • Keep v1 as backup
  • Document any project-specific notes

Week 4: Full Migration

  • Remove v1 files (optional)
  • Update team documentation
  • Archive old wrapper scripts

Common Questions

Q: Do I need to regenerate fixtures for existing boards?
A: No, if the output from v1 works, you don't need to regenerate. V2 produces identical geometry.

Q: Will my OpenSCAD files need updates?
A: No, openfixture.scad is unchanged. V2 generates the same parameters.

Q: Can I use v2 plugin with v1 generator?
A: Not recommended. Use matching versions (both v1 or both v2).

Q: What if I find a bug?
A: Check documentation first, then log an issue if needed. Include error messages and KiCAD version.
