Delete when backed up

I though about that more and that option would effectively delete all photos from my device which is not what I wanted :) What I wanted is an easy way to delete backed up photos to free up some storage but not delete all of them (e.g. leave last 100).

PhotoBackup should be able to check whether the photo is still in the backup storage (the server) before deleting it.

Problem with "older than a week" may be that it can delete all of your photos if you don't take a picture for a week etc.

Ultimately, I didn't plan for PhotoBackup to be a storage manager (i.e. to erase data for the user). I guess there are apps for that already, with probably way more options than what PB can propose.

Then, if I implement it anyway, last comments open a optionable question: should such deletion be time-managed or count-managed. I guess no answer would be definitive on this.

The only problem with other apps managing storage in that regard is that they don't know what was backed up. As to deleting, maybe other approach would be to be able to delete photos from "Upload journal"? That way it wouldn't need to be a setting per se, I'd fine just by going to that list and delete whatever I see was backed up.

Hmmm, it's a good idea to allow this through the Upload journal, that's the kind of things I want to enhance in this view. Probably will look into something like this.

Related: If the backed up photo is resized (eg: invoice picture is readable in smaller then 20MP resolution), then it would be nice if it could be replaced on the phone too.
So I'm after both for deleting and replacing photos.

Would be nice if the server could have an api endpoint of what is ready to be deleted (blurred photos, invoice pictures which do not needed on the device anymore, etc).
And what is needed to be replaced (usually to a smaller sized picture, ie. color corrected, rotated, cropped, resized image).

So I'm more proposing some additional api endpoints, which the client software reads for additional actions.
And not for some automatic client side settings wizardery.
Not all photos will ever fit to a single settings.

FWIW I think the simplest feature here that would benefit a lot of people is simply a button in the upload journal "Free Up Space". When clicked it prompts the user with a dialog that says how much space will be freed up by deleting media that has already been uploaded (according to the journal). Then the user can confirm or cancel.

I would avoid automatic deleting for now, too much chance for something to go wrong.

Likewise, I wouldn't check the server to see if photos are still there.. that just provides extra overhead. If the journal says a photo was uploaded, then it was and should be considered safe.

This won't capture 100% of usecases discussed in this thread, but (1) is easiest to implement (2) safest as it only deletes with explicit user action (3) mirrors existing features in proprietary apps like Google Photos
