In NorESMhub/NorESM#825, the need is described to have the surface components receive CO2 concentrations from a file when the atmosphere is using a difference source and/or computing prognostic CO2 in the chemistry scheme.
Some examples are:
- 1pctCO2-BGC = Atmospheric radiation reads preindustrial CO2 but land and ocean reads ramp-up 1%CO2/yr
- 1pctCO2-RAD = Atmospheric radiation reads ramp-up 1%CO2/yr but land and ocean reads preindustrial CO2
However, this feature should also handle cases such as 4xCO2 experiments and any case where the atmosphere component and the surface components will receive and use different CO2 fields at their interfaces.
