StreamXL Security Audit

Last Audited: July 2026
Status: Minimal security concerns; standard practices

🟡 HIGH Priority Issues

1. No Dependency Version Pinning

Severity: HIGH
Finding: 0 pinned, no deps listed

Timeline: v1.0.1 (Q3 2026)

🔵 MEDIUM Priority

2. No Input Validation on File Paths

Risk: Path traversal if writing to user-specified paths
Severity: MEDIUM

Recommendation:

from pathlib import Path

def validate_write_path(path: str) -> Path:
    p = Path(path).resolve()
    if not p.suffix.lower() == '.xlsx':
        raise ValueError("Must write to .xlsx file")
    return p

Timeline: v1.1.0 (Q3 2026)

3. No File Corruption Detection

Risk: Partial writes could corrupt Excel files
Severity: MEDIUM

Recommendation:

  • Verify file integrity after write
  • Atomic writes (write to temp, then rename)
  • CRC/hash validation

Timeline: v1.2.0 (Q4 2026)

🔵 LOW Priority

4. No Secrets Scanning in CI

Timeline: v1.0.2 (Q3 2026)

Security Roadmap

Issue Severity Target
Pin dependencies HIGH v1.0.1
Path validation MEDIUM v1.1.0
File integrity checks MEDIUM v1.2.0
CI secrets scanning LOW v1.0.2

Testing

pip-audit --strict
bandit -r . -ll

# Test path traversal attempts
assert raises(ValueError, validate_write_path, "../../../etc/passwd.xlsx")

Deployment

  • Validate all input file paths
  • Use atomic writes (write-then-rename)
  • Monitor disk space to prevent partial writes
  • Run with read-only file system where possible
