Hyperkin DuchesS Rumble Support

I tried my Hyperkin DuchesS controller on my modified Original Xbox with RP2350-USB-A earlier this week and rumble wasn't working with OGX-Mini-2026. I believe this was the 'OGX-Mini-v1.0.0a5-RP2350_USB_A-Multi' build.

The problem with rumble appears to be fixed on pull request #214 on the main OGX-Mini project. The past couple of weeks I tried to compile the patches for the RP2350-USB-A + Xbox 360 Controller + Hyperkin DuchesS Controller support, but I wasn't able to get any builds to actually work for me.

Thankfully the efforts of this brilliant group in this project solved the first two issues together. It would be wonderful if the OGX-Mini[-2026] project's fully supported all Original Xbox accessories out of the box.

The two year anniversary of Halo 2 on Insignia is coming up on March 15th and I am sure a lot of people would like to use their DuchesS controllers to celebrate.

I can check this out and add it as well! I just dont have a OG Xbox or the given controller to test is why I had not added much to them yet. Thank you for sharing this.

Gave this a whirl to test Xbox One or similar gamepad regression, but something in this PR breaks third-party Xbox 360 support (possibly the endpoint number change?). Might need a bit more love before being merged.

@MegaCadeDev No worries. I can do some basic tests if there is a build that is believed to work on the RP2350-USB-A. I am sure others in the community would glad to test this project with this controller as well.

I think right now only the Wingman XB 2/3 fully supports this controller. I don't have this adapter personally. I think open-source solutions are better for the community in the long run.

@faithvoid Thank you for taking a first look at the changes. I was worried there might be a conflict between the adapter hardware and controller platforms. At some point it would be neat if the web UI could be utilized to enable or disable features that might conflict for other controllers.

@faithvoid No worries. It happens. I have mixed results testing the build provided. The good news is that the Hyperkin DuchesS controller vibrates now in this build. The results are the following:

Original Xbox (TestLaunch):

• Vibration was responsive for the left and right sides, but vibration did seem to get stuck at times until triggered again. This could be a quirk with TestLaunch.
• Vibration only triggered up to 80-85% on the meter bars, but after this point vibration stopped. Again not sure if this is a quirk or if there is vibration scaling under the hood that needs adjusting.

Halo CE + Halo 2:

• Vibration was responsive and at a level appropriate to what I would expect.
• I couldn't think of a way to trigger vibration at max constantly to see if the same 80%+ vibration behavior was triggered, but it didn't seem to drop off as far as I could tell.
• The vibration felt better than my old 8bitdo Ultimate v1 controller.

I don't have a Wingman adapter for the Original Xbox nor have I tried to use this controller on a PC. So I am not sure what is normal with this particular controller.

The bad news is that I couldn't get my 8bitdo Ultimate v1 controller to reliably connect with the 2.4 GHz USB adapter. I believe this was working earlier in the week with OGX-Mini-v1.0.0a5-RP2350_USB_A-Multi. I usually use this controller with an official OGX-Live adapter for the original Xbox. The one time I got a connection with the 8bitdo Ultimate the vibration kept going off and on every 5-10 seconds.

I don't know if there was something different about this build to just enable Hyperkin DuchesS connectivity or if there is a functionality regression on the other controller types.

I did test the same test with the 8bitdo Ultimate using the OGX-Live and it behaved normally. I also tested the vibration with OGX-Live on the TestLaunch controller tester and the sticky vibration behavior didn't show up.

@roberthallers That is great to hear. The community needs all the help it can get to keep cool projects like these alive. I am open to perform the same tests as needed. If you have a theory of what might be the problem, or any potential solutions, it would be great to share with the group.

That's so weird...I literally use an Ultimate C 2.4GHz as my primary wireless controller and I'm not experiencing this issue myself. Can you post your PID and VID of your specific controller, just in case it's a model that's somehow not targeted? This build goes full nuclear and treats every 360-style device as requiring a heartbeat (this might jank out the LEDs on OEM 360 wired controllers, but shouldn't affect anything else), let me know if this resolves it, otherwise I think we definitely might be running into a regression somewhere.

Also, in my experience, turning the controller on before turning the console/adapter on is the best shot for 100% successful connection each time, or tapping reset when the controller's paired if the OGX-Mini LED isn't showing the connected LED status.

I want to say the 8bitdo Ultimate and Ultimate C versions have different capabilities even though they have the same form factor.

I'll need to try turning on the controller before powering up the console as I didn't think of that order. With the other OGX-Mini versions with the Original Xbox I found this process should work in most cases:

1. Connect the OGX-Mini to the controller port so the board is powered.
2. Press the reset button on the Waveshare RP2350-USB-A to reboot the OGX-Mini software
3. Turn on the power to the wireless controller near the same time as the OGX-Mini reset.

This process usually yields the light indicators on the controller and 8bitdo adapter that suggests a link was made, but controller input to the console is what doesn't work on.

I'll test this build a little later tonight and let you know how it goes.

@faithvoid I tested the latest build and the 8bitdo Ultimate still has the same behavior with the background vibration pulse.

I did use the Hyperkin DuchesS with Halo 2 some more with this build and it does feel natural. So there is progress at least on that front.

Have you tried any of the recent releases? We already fixed the rumble issues in a prior update.

@MegaCadeDev I had not tried the recent releases with my Waveshare RP2350 before tonight as the changes seemed focused on other platforms.

So I got some time tonight to test out the OGX-Mini-v1.0.0a8-RP2350_USB_A-Multi.uf2 release on two separate RP2350s and I can report the following:

• Hyperkin DuchesS - This controller is functional on an original Xbox, but the rumble does not activate at all.

• 8Bitdo Ultimate Controller - I was not able to get this controller to yield any input to the original xbox even though the 2.4 GHz dongle indicated the controller was connected. I am not sure if you want to spinoff the 8bitdo Ultimate loss of functionality to a separate issue, but the information on it is provided below:

  • Manufacturer: 8BitDo
  • Model: Ultimate Wireless Controller
  • Vendor ID: 0x2dc8
  • Product ID: 0x3109

I was able to get non-rumble enabled input on the DuchesS so I know the OGX-Mini release landed on the RP2350. As I mentioned I repeated the process on a second RP2350 just to be sure I put the right build on it, but I got identical results both times.

I've started a KoFi to be able to gather money for controllers to be able to add support. Unfortunately without the controller I have no real way of adding a driver specific to it to help.
