It needs to be installed on both a local and remote computer.

It uses a virtual channel, which is a pretty technical concept but it is documented pretty well by Microsoft.

You can use the key sequence ctrl+alt+break to toggle full screen mode. When you exited full screen, you should be able to alt+tab out of the rdp window.
