Linux build?

Hello,
I was using the CMake stuff to help with BasisDoctrina build for Windows. I saw UNIX listed in the build scripts so I spun up one of my Ubuntu 24.04 VMs and kicked off a build.

1. So, is the UNIX an artifact from days gone by or is it for some commercial Unix like HP-UX?
2. Is there an extra step for Linux that I somehow missed?
3. Should this project build on Linux?

I didn't want to get too far down following your stuff and break my perfectly functioning Linux support.

The current development plan is to restore linux/unix support with wxWidgets handling the cross-platform GUI needs. This is in progress on the master branch, but not yet completed. It is planned as part of milestone 2.0.

Previously there was a stubbed out implementation for the default preset on unix, but that has been removed (it was never finished anyway).

Also, if you build with the preset wx instead of default, you will be building on linux at the current state of support (which is still buggy and slow LOL).

You may need a bunch of stuff installed on your linux environment for this to even build, the list of packages needed are in .github/workflows/wx-requirements.txt

Ahhhh Well, feel free to thieve code from BasisDoctrina where I build both Debian and RPM packages using CMake for the build and scripts for the actual packaging. I never trust Cmake packaging in the Linux world. One needs scripts to control where each RPM or Debian based distro chose to put things. Actually, if you aren't too far down the road with wxWidgets, you might want to pull down RedDiamond. https://sourceforge.net/projects/reddiamond/ It uses LsCs in latest build. That is a fork of CopperSpice which is a fork of Qt 4.x that had a lot of changes.  I never did the pain of building for Windows, but there are Windows artifacts in the CMake files. CopperSpice does build and run on Windows, I just never made the effort. They do have the Diamond text editor as one of their cross platform examples. https://www.copperspice.com/documentation-diamond.html Just offering some options. Always easier to experiment with a project you don't care about when tweaking build systems. Now I know to be careful with what I steal. 😇

I've worked in both wxWidgets and Qt and I don't want to use Qt. :)

Packaging in the linux world seems to be a bit of a mess. xfractint is packaged by/for some distros and I would like to just get that replaced with Id.

Nobody wants to use Qt!

QML introduced north of a zillion bugs. Qtc has adopted an "everybody must buy a license" definition of Open-Source.

CopperSpice still carries a lot of Qt bagged with the platform plugins, but at least QML was mostly gone.

Packaging in the Linux world has gotten much better of the past decade. RPM distros have actual tools. CMake, on the other hand, is rather iffy for the world of packaging on Linux. Read through the CMakeLists.txt files for BUILDING_DEBIAN and BUILDING_RPM. Those are the tweaks you have to make when building packages. I've not tried cross compiling from x86_64 to ARM.

deb_build.etc directory has the files required for Debian.

The deb and rpm .sh files could almost be stolen verbatim once package name is changed.

because BD doesn't really have anything right now. That is the dark magic for an RPM. Depending on how you build your library, you may or may not need the sed line. That cleans up the mess auto generated cmake files get.

The Qt application I worked on was Qt4 at the time, IIRC. It is an extremely large 3D content creation and rendering application and uses the javascript engine for driving the application extensively. I did most of the work of converting it from Qt3 to Qt4. So I'm pretty familiar with Qt.

The reason I don't want to use Qt is that I find it rather heavyweight, whereas wx tries to be the smallest unified API around the native UI facilities. The default for linux is GTK3, I believe. It's documented on the wxWidgets site.

With a little help from my minions, a simple raw X11 driver was implemented this weekend. I'm working on finishing up a 1.4 release but the master branch right now should build and run fine on linux.

I submitted some requests to have Iterated Dynamics created as a package for linux and bsd distributions. I need to restructure the layout to be more unix-like (bin, lib, share folders, etc.) to be more friendly to unix packagers and I also need to sort out some build issues on BSD. It turns out the package maintainers are just grabbing the source archive from the release and trying to build that, but that doesn't include the vcpkg submodule and one of them grumbled about CMake (which seems very odd as it is the dominant build system for C/C++ projects now). The missing submodule is the bigger problem because it means that random versions of the dependencies are being grabbed instead of the ones being used explicitly.

So, while I do have packaged archives for linux that work properly when unpacked, the build isn't in a suitable shape for directly being consumed by the unix packaging folks. I really want Id to displace xfractint as the defacto fractal renderer on unix platforms because Id fixes so many platform issues and is more robust.

Again, never use vcpkg for anyting real. In true Microsoft fashion it is meant for one user doing one thing for themselves. Randomly pulling dependencies from half of God's creation is a known problem with it. Vcpkg always builds from TIP. Adding insult to injury, even if you do spec a version, MS only allows so many versions in their repos.

Look at the LsCs-(platform)-build-dependencies.sh files for dependencies and build-LsCs-(platform).sh packaging files.

Many people hate CMake for good reason.

BSD has a lot of Crumudgeons in the support ranks. They will only accept Makefile.

I understand a lot. I spend over 4 months trying to get VCPKG working with my projects. VCPKG always pulls from TIP for dependencies. Even if you spec a version, Microsoft removes it from the repositories the nanosecond Ubuntu drops support for the Ubuntu version it was in. You cannot successfully build for Ubuntu 18.04 (a version still used in many medical device shops) using VCPKG.

Now that Ubuntu 2.04 has had support end you are seeing the versions which supported it pulled from VCPKG repos as well.

VCPKG != LTS

It only wants the TIP of TIP. The lab type software your library will become part of needs to be buildable and maintainable long after Ubuntu or insert-distro-here declared the version it shipped with dead.
