I have observed this in Firefox (Developer Edition 61.0b4 (64-bit), macOS), but it's probably an issue in other browsers, too.
An example page that triggers this would be https://gist.github.com/orta/5c66adbab469d5fe8c4381eaec190eb5. My guess is that it's caused by lots and lots of DOM elements.
