The # button in the bottom bar serves to define undefined variables and queries.
But I often would like it to also work for defined variables in the Start Variables section, for particle systems that I will reuse in game with different variables defined in pre_effect_script via Animation controllers, particle keyframes, etc (for different particle lifetimes, emitter shape size, particle colors...).
Being able to preview the particle effect without overwriting the variables would reduce the hazard of losing expressions or values, when changing them with the intent to restore them afterwards.
I made a mockup of one way that could work.
-
Since the space in the bottom bar where undefined queries and variables appear would be a bit cramped, I think it would be more convenient to display them right next to the original values.
-
A clickable Arrow button in between the two fields could let us quickly copy the expression on the right to the one on the left.
-
I greyed out the left side, but I think selecting and editing text in either field should still be possible to copy and paste parts or all of them.
