Restoring transaction logs

Hi,
Following on from #45 we understand that we aren't getting auto-recovery snapshots when using Rubrik at the moment but we've been testing the restore of databases from a snapshot that have been mounted on a different drive from the Notes data drive.
That has worked when restoring back to the chosen snapshot point but we haven't been able to apply transaction logs for point in time restores.
Below are the console log entries from our most recent restore but I can't see a point where it is trying to apply transaction logs.
Could you advise how this can be enabled either using the transaction logs that are still on our T: drive or restore or mounted onto the F: drive ?

You are trying to fly before you can work.

1. Snapshot restore
2. Have delta files somewhere else --> you did not say where nor what config you are using
3. Apply translog also means you need to first backup translogs somewhere --> which cannot be a snapshot based on the nature of archive translog
4. Translog needs to be replayed from first (point of backup) to last translog (current point in time). Domino restore needs to look at every translog extend. you will need a restore integration for translog as well
5. Looks like you selected every possible restore option at once. This should work but I it makes me feel you are just trying everything to get things working.

The combination

• Snapshot without auto recovery
• Deleta files
• Translog backup and restore

can all work, but they need to be setup meeting your environment.
But this isn't possible to help thru an issue on GitHub. Even if you would share all required details this is more consulting than community help.

Hi,
We've now got scripts to help us do our backup and restore from Rubrik and can now use the Domino Backup database to do a restore without point-in-time being enabled.

However when we try a point-in-time restore we are seeing the following error (the database is restored without any transaction logs being applied)

With the details you provided I can only guess what you are doing. This doesn't sound like you are really getting the right data restored.
We cannot help if you are not providing details and we have to assume what you are doing during restore.

have you looked into this:

"Restore: Empty Restore OS Level Command!"

why is this empty?
if you are restoring manually -- how would you get this timed and make sure the right files are there?

Just to let you know that we changed where the transaction logs were being backup up to and now have a working point-in-time restore ...

Hi,
Do you have any documentation to help us with the 'DbMarkCorrupt(Database failed recovery.)' error?
While we can do point-in-time restores with Media Recovery Replay on some databases, others on the same server give that error and will only restore to the previous snapshot.
I suspect it's related to some changes being made around the time of the snapshot but it would be good if we could work out which databases would be marked as corrupted before we try to recover them.

What type of documentation are you looking for?
The database gets corrupted and the back-end code detects it. there isn't more information available and you would need to look into how you apply the changes etc.

Here is what I think what happens:

Probably wrong data is applied which causes the database to get corrupted.

It's hard to tell without knowing what you exactly do what could be the root cause. the translog should not be the problem. you would get error messages from Translog if you don't have the right log extends.

But maybe you are applying bad .delta data? or not apply the delta data?

I did some further testing with regards .delta files and we have been able to do a point-in-time restore where one was available and it was applied correctly.

However, the database showing DbMarkCorrupt didn't have any delta file available so we're still investigating further.

Even without delta information the database needs to be restored and 0 delta bytes need to be applied to make the database consistent.
The database is open when it is copied in backup mode. I can't say 100% that this is your issue, but this could be the case.
The restore operation always updates the database on restore. Not only if there is a delta.
Also when using a backup integration where deltas can be applied, the end of each backup operation makes sure the database is consistent.

In contrast to a file back-end, this operation cannot be performed during backup -- because the target file cannot be accessed by Domino.
In this case the restore operation performs this operation. This isn't different than any other Domino Backup application leveraging the Domino Backup C-API.

Usually backup applications encapsulate those type of operations and you would not see them.
But because this is an open integration intended to fit with multiple back-ends this is an open integration where you have to provide the right type of integration.

There are two cases where deltas are directly applied:

1. All type of file backup integrations (like with a local disk or a file share)
2. Windows VSS Auto Recovery snapshots where Domino Backup can mount the resulting snapshot

Without more details I can't say what might have happened to your database to get it corrupted but I hope this explains a bit more about the background and helps you to find out.

Could you clarify how '0 delta bytes need to be applied to make the database consistent' is expected to work?
We have enabled the 'Backup keep empty delta files' option in the backup configuration document in the hope that this would create all the files we need but we don't see any 0 bytes delta files being created.

You don't need to keep empty delta files. The restore operation automatically brings the database online.
If there is a delta file, it will apply the delta. Else it brings the database just online with a 0 byte delta.
That's a backup C-API restore technical detail what technically happens. You don't need any specific step.
Just use the Domino restore.

OK, thanks for the clarification. We are still seeing point-in-time restores work sometimes but fail with the DbMarkCorrupt error at times but it is never predictable as to when it might fail. We have tried adding in incremental backups to ensure that things are kept up to date in the background which we thought had worked but then we still can still get the DbMarkCorrupt error on some databases while others work fine.
We will try to escalate our ticket with HCL to see if someone there can give us more detailed information on the error.
