You can add a fallback to 'en' if name[lang] is missing before calling .localeCompare :

newCodes.sort((a, b) => {
  const nameA = a?.name?.[lang] || a?.name?.en || '';
  const nameB = b?.name?.[lang] || b?.name?.en || '';
  return nameA.localeCompare(nameB);
});

This ensures you're always comparing valid strings.
