Boot error aarch64-linux VM 0.9.0-rc.0

I'm getting a nixos stage 1 boot error, when trying to launch dogebox on my aarch64-linux (asahi fedora 42)

Timed out waiting for device /dev/root, trying to mount anyway.
mounting /dev/root on /iso...
mount: /mnt-root/iso: fsconfig() failed: /dev/root: Can't lookup blockdev.

An error occurred in stage 1 of the boot process, which must mount the
root filesystem on `/mnt-root' and then start stage 2.  Press one
of the following keys:

  i) to launch an interactive shell
  f) to start an interactive shell having pid 1 (needed if you want to
     start stage 2's init manually)
  r) to reboot immediately
  *) to ignore the error and continue

To be clear, the NixOS graphical boot menu does show up. Selecting to boot dogebox then turns off the display output in the vm, the output is then solely on the serial interface.

I fixed this in my vm manager by adding a USB CDROM drive with the iso

the xml is:

  <backingStore/>
  <target dev="sdb" bus="usb" removable="on"/>

  <address type="usb" bus="0" port="3"/>
</disk>

Instead of a SCSI CDRom.
