EV Shift vs. Exposure

What precisely is the difference between the EV Shift (in the Tone Mapper, used in AgX mode) and the Exposure adjustment? Observing the respective changes in the histogram, the brightest values seem to move to the top faster in EV Shift, resulting in posterization in overexposed areas. Automatic adjustment can lower the EV Shift but raise the Exposure. What's the best way to balance these tools?

Exposure adjusts the raw (pun not intended) brightness of your image, as if you changed a camera setting at the time of capture., shifting the whole histogram left/right. EV Shift brightens or darkens the final output by reshaping the tone curve, which can for example squeeze highlights together.

A tone mapper is used for converting the color space from the raw file to the final compressed image (jpg for example) at the end of editing, since a raw file has a far greater dynamic range than a typical jpg does.

Maybe it's a good idea to add a quick "help" text to some modules?
