Hi Greg, Builty, and everyone in the community, First of all, thank you so much for this amazing project. The TonexOneController has completely changed the game for using these compact pedals, and I deeply appreciate all the hard work put into it.
I have a question regarding a specific setup I am trying to achieve, and I would love to know if this is technically possible with the current architecture or if anyone else has already found a workaround for it.
My Current Setup:
Screen: Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4.3B running precompiled firmware (TonexController_V2.0.4.2_beta5).
MIDI Interface: Tangxi MIDI Shield connected via a reciprocal DSD TECH SH-U12 (MAX13487) automatic directional transceiver into the screen's RS-485 green terminal block.
Controller: Paint Audio MIDI Captain STD.
The Rig: I love running a dual-amplifier/stereo rig. The first Tonex One normal is connected directly to the Waveshare via USB-C. A second Tonex One+ is chained to the physical MIDI Thru port of the Tangxi Shield.
Currently, everything works flawlessly in a unidirectional way: the MIDI Captain sends commands, the second Tonex One+ responds via MIDI Thru, the Waveshare processes the data, and the main Tonex One normal updates via USB-C.
What I want to achieve (The Question): I am trying to make this setup fully bidirectional. I want the MIDI Captain's LED rings and display to update in real-time when I manually tap a preset on the Waveshare touchscreen or simply by changing presets anyware. However, during my hardware tests, I noticed that the RS-485 serial TX line on the Waveshare 4.3B platform remains completely silent when changing presets on the screen or Tonex pedal (the TXD LED on my MAX13487 does not flash at all). It seems the precompiled firmware opens the serial port strictly as a MIDI Input and does not mirror touchscreen or pedal actions back to the hardware TX line.
My questions to the developers and the community are:
Is it currently possible to force the Waveshare 4.3B firmware to send/mirror MIDI Out data through the RS-485 green block?
If it’s a software limitation in the current precompiled beta, is adding a "Wired MIDI Output / Thru" option in the Web Config something that could be achievable in future updates?
Has anyone else in the community attempted to get bidirectional LED feedback/sync with a MIDI Captain or a similar smart controller using this specific Waveshare screen?
I would love to hear your thoughts, insights, or if someone has a custom script/branch that tackles this loop-free bidirectional communication.
Thank you so much for your time and for keeping this incredible project evolving!
Best regards,
Luisosoriop
