Hey all, it's been a while and still no Proton-EM 11.0, so I thought I would write a status update.
Proton-EM 11.0-1 will release eventually. However, all my efforts are currently going into upstreaming the winewayland driver that is part of Proton-EM and derivative projects. The reason I have started upstreaming it now is that I don't know of any other things that remain in this driver that aren't client surface composition or cross-process rendering (or dependent on those features); both require refactoring significant portions of Wine to do in a way acceptable for upstream. Because of this, I was thinking of a simpler solution as a stopgap for the upstream solution that was being worked on. However, I recently saw Rémi Bernon had started upstreaming this. Therefore, the best option for me is to do the same. So far, I'm extremely grateful that upstream is willing to review and help me get this code landed.
I don't think people realize the amount of changes this project's winewayland driver has compared to upstream wine. (I just read some comments on Phoronix saying they wanted to test the fractional scaling protocol that I recently upstreamed on Proton-GE ... it's been there for literally more than a year.) I know lines of code are not a good metric, but there are more than 3000 lines of code added in this driver compared to the upstream one (not including protocol XMLs, of course). Upstreaming all this will take some time.
Therefore, I would not expect a stable release for some time (I recommend using proton-cachyos or using the GitHub actions builds for now). In addition, some work also needs to be done to improve the mesa EGL driver (to avoid hacks in winewayland) and a patch for mesa vulkan wayland WSI (required for broken games like Doom Eternal) that I'm currently working on fixing the review comments of because it has finally gotten a review.
As a sort of compromise solution, I will add nightly releases (#112) to this project when time allows. I want to finish the documentation before releasing that, but the July FSR release is going to make the documentation obsolete again. So hopefully the nightlies will start as soon as it releases.
Thanks for your support over the past year; it's been wonderful to learn the skills required to build Proton-EM as a whole. And now it's time for Proton-EM to lose its purpose in the most meaningful way: making all its code land in the appropriate places.
I will open a GitHub Sponsorship thingy (or Ko-fi, Patreon, etc.) soon if anyone is interested in donating to support this project (or any other work I have done in the past). For the first time, I am finally in a situation where I can accept monetary donations. If you are interested in donating, please let me know.
