I would have to say that the public documentation is not where I would like it to be but it has been something I want to work on. If it's helpful to you, I would be happy to walk you through installing and running GSL (it doesn't technically need programming experience but you would need to be comfortable working on a command line to run simple commands). We also badly need to make a web friendly version of this available so people don't have to deal with the command line. If you could share a tiny bit about what you'd like to do (organism, types of genetic designs), I am happy to help you get started and use that to seed better documentation. It looks like you are from down-under! - send some nicer weather over there.
